What does a Dietitian do?

An Accredited Practising Dietitian is a university qualified and nationally accredited food and nutrition expert. They identify as an allied health professional that delivers medical nutrition therapy and nutrition advice for healthy individuals.

The Wellness Workshop’s Melbourne Dietitians have completed a University-level degree and are accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), abide by a Code of Professional Conduct, comply with regular professional development annually, and have completed at least 20 weeks' placement in a clinical setting.

what's the difference between a dietitian and Nutritionist?

Unlike Dietitians, nutritionists do not need to complete an accredited degree. In fact, in Australia, anybody can call themselves a “nutritionist” despite having no formal qualifications. Only Accredited Practicing Dietitians, like those at The Wellness Workshop, are permitted to provide medical nutrition therapy and work in hospitals, as well having the permission to provide eligible patients with rebates through Medicare, DVA, NDIS and a large range of Health Insurance Funds.

We will not force a diet upon you, and will only provide a specific eating plan if medically required (i.e. food intolerances) or requested by your doctor or specialist physician. The Non-Diet Approach and Intuitive Eating Program developed by our Melbourne Dietitians aims to help you improve health outcomes and behaviours while increasing self-esteem and body acceptance. The approach has been proven to reduce yo-yo dieting and body dissatisfaction and is based on the simple premise that the best way to improve health is to honour and listen to your body’s internal cues and messages. With research now showing that “dieting is almost guaranteed to result in weight gain over and above what was originally lost” (The Health Body Company, Susan Williams, APD) while contributing to disordered eating and low self-esteem, the Non-Diet Approach and Intuitive Eating Program encourages individuals to do exactly opposite this and adopt a more flexible, accepting and nurturing relationship to food.

What to expect in your Dietetic consultation?

During your initial consultation, our Melbourne Dietitian will ask you questions about your medical history, lifestyle, work, social background, and your current health-related concerns and nutrition goals.


You will have the opportunity to speak freely and in confidence about everything and anything that you feel is impacting on you, your health, and your relationship with food.


From there we’ll then provide you with a tailored plan created specifically to reach your personal goals in small achievable steps. We will also equip you with resources, recipe ideas, and practical exercises that will help facilitate the changes you wish to make. 


In review appointments with your Melbourne Dietitian, you can ask questions and address any barriers to your goals, develop insight into your eating behaviours, and adapt any strategies as necessary.


Review appointments are vital for ensuring you are on the right track and any suggestions/exercises our Dietitian has given you are either going well, or need to be changed (i.e. food intolerances, FODMAP…etc)

Does Medicare cover a DietITIAN consultation?

Individuals with a diagnosed chronic medical condition (e.g. Osteoporosis, IBS, Liver Disease) who are under the care of multiple health professionals may be considered by their General Practitioner for an Enhanced Primary Care Plan. If eligible, this plan provides you with up to 5 sessions per calendar year with the allied health professional/s of your choice.

For those with a diagnosed Eating Disorder (Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder etc) or patients who meet relevant criteria for disordered eating behaviour may also be eligible for up to 20 Dietetic sessions per calendar year rebated under Medicare.

Please note that to obtain this care plan with a Dietitian in Melbourne, you will need to consult with your GP to determine your needs and eligibility before you can claim your sessions. Those under a care plan receive a Medicare rebate of $55.10 for Dietetic consultations which is subject to change without notice at the discretion of Medicare.

Medicare and Private Health Rebates

Medicare and private health rebates may be claimed for some services provided by a Dietitian.


Does Private Health insurance cover a Dietetic consultation?

If you have a private health policy with at least Medium Level Extras cover, usually it will cover Dietetics/Nutrition consultations for up to $400 per year. Generally, rebates cover 60% of the total fee (depending on your cover level and provider) however it’s important to check with your individual provider and policy for an accurate quote.

What should I bring to my MELBOURNE DIETITIAN consultation?

You will not need to bring anything to your appointment, however, to make the most of your nutrition session we ask that you complete a short New Client Questionnaire online prior to your appointment which is sent to you upon booking.


If you have any other documents you feel would be relevant (referral letters, blood test results, diagnostic results), we would appreciate you bringing these with you as they will help us to conduct a more comprehensive assessment. Otherwise, we may ask your permission to obtain these results from your GP.

How many sessions with the Dietitian will I need?

How many sessions you need with a Dietitian depends on your individual goals and needs. We recommend 2 sessions at a minimum to collect important information and review progress. However, if you want to make long term changes to your diet and eating behaviours, further appointments are highly recommended to guide you towards long term maintenance and improved wellbeing.



Branavie is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) and Accredited Nutritionist (AN). She is an advocate of the Non-Diet Approach and Health At Every Size, and has undergone Intuitive Eating training through the London Center for Intuitive Eating.

Elena is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and a Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician (CEDC) awarded by Australia & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED). With a lived experience of Trauma and Postnatal Depression, Elena obtained further training in these fields and is now experienced in supporting people with mental health conditions, neurodiverse persons, as well as people living with Eating Disorders.

Elena is compassionate, gentle and caring. She utilises a Non-Diet, Weight-Inclusive approach that focuses on helping people improve their relationships with food, with their bodies and improving long term health.
